Unraveling the MYSTERIES of Ancient Indian STEPWELLS
I am taking you inside a very fascinating place built in medieval India. And no this is not some secret underground basement or something.
You see every great civilization has made a unique contribution to the world of architecture. Egypt gave the world pyramids, Greece gave the world Corinthian columns and India gave the world stepwells which elevated the humble act of collecting water into an extravagant piece of public theater.
We are going inside one such stepwell. This 500-year-old structure is five stories deep and is designed in five levels. Each level is provided with finely sculpted pillars and the builder has also provided stone ledges for people to rest.

This stepwell was built during the reign of Mehmum Begada, the ruler of gujrat sultanate. The ruler had to spend 3,29,000 Mahmudis which was currency they used back then. Roughly 3 lakh rupees at that time.
But the question is why did they build it?
There are nearly 3000 stepwells in India. Some were once owned by wealthy merchants, some by Royal families and some were built for public use. They had 3 purposes -
